Early test | October 2026
A new advertising platform can create interest. It still needs to prove that it fits a business’s audience, offer and budget. OpenAI began rolling ChatGPT Ads into Malaysia and Singapore in September 2026. The channel is another option to test, not a replacement for search or social advertising.
This article shares our small internal B2B test and the lessons businesses should consider before launch. ChatGPT Ads features and policies can change, so check the current requirements before planning a campaign.
Key takeaways
-
Our two-week test generated traffic and form submissions, but some enquiries were off-target. Lead quality matters more than clicks alone.
-
Before testing, check offer eligibility and prepare the message, landing page, tracking and follow-up process.
1. What ChatGPT Ads are
According to OpenAI’s guide to ads in ChatGPT, ChatGPT Ads may appear below a response and are clearly labelled. They may be shown to users on Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not have ads. These paid placements are separate from ChatGPT’s answers and do not influence them.
In Malaysia, self-serve Ads Manager is listed as available for eligible advertisers. OpenAI’s campaign setup guide lists Views, Clicks or Conversions as campaign objectives, with a current minimum daily budget of RM35 for MYR billing. Its ad-format guide explains that an ad can include the advertiser’s name, image, headline, copy and landing page.
OpenAI’s campaign setup guide explains that advertisers can set country and platform options, and eligible campaigns can use custom audiences. Its ad-matching guidance explains that ads can also be matched using the current conversation, the ad and its landing page, and advertiser-provided context hints. These hints guide matching. They are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee that an ad will appear in a specific conversation.
2. Mini case study: our early ChatGPT Ads test
The goal: Explore whether ChatGPT Ads could support traffic and lead-generation goals for our B2B offer.
The setup: A small, two-week internal test across late September and early October 2026, using separate traffic and conversion campaigns.
What we advertised: A free 30-minute consultation for businesses struggling to generate leads from paid ads. The ad headline was “Get 30Min Free Consultation”, supported by “You’re spending on paid ads, but leads just aren’t coming in.” Visitors were directed to our enquiry landing page.
What we tracked: Traffic to the landing page and form submissions.
The results:
-
36,467 impressions and 919 clicks
-
2.52% click-through rate (CTR)
-
RM1.14 average cost per click (CPC)
-
Three leads, tracked as form submissions
The traffic campaign recorded 517 clicks and no conversions. The conversion campaign recorded 402 clicks and three form-submission conversions. These are platform-reported events, not confirmed qualified leads or sales opportunities.
The challenge behind the numbers: In our test, the setup offered limited advertiser control, so we relied heavily on the platform’s ad-matching signals. Getting clicks was only part of the story. Some enquiries did not match our business-to-business offer, raising a more important question: were we reaching the right potential buyers?
This was an early test, not a performance benchmark or a guarantee of future results.
3. How ChatGPT Ads differ from other channels

These roles can overlap. ChatGPT Ads may help a brand appear while someone explores or compares options. Test where it fits the buyer’s journey and the business goal.
The way people research buying decisions is changing. In Entermind’s September 2026 survey, reported by MARKETING-INTERACTIVE, 43% of 1,300 surveyed adult AI users in Malaysia turned to AI assistants before search engines for important consumer decisions. The study also found that 41% had made a purchase or financial decision primarily based on AI information or recommendations. This gives brands a reason to explore how AI fits into their customers’ decision-making journey.
These findings describe the surveyed AI users, not all Malaysians. They cover AI use broadly, not ChatGPT Ads performance or B2B buying intent.

4. Five checks before you test
-
Is the offer eligible? Check OpenAI’s current ad rules for the product, service and country. Do not assume that launch in Malaysia means every industry is approved.
-
Who needs the offer? Describe the buyer, the problem they are trying to solve and why the offer fits. Use that to guide the message and context hints.
-
Is the landing page ready? Make the offer, proof points and next step clear. Keep the ad promise consistent with the page.
-
Can you measure the right action? Decide whether the goal is visibility, traffic or a supported conversion event. Check that links, forms and analytics are ready before spending.
-
Can you judge lead quality? Agree how the client will follow up and report whether contacts are relevant. Lead quality and sales results depend on the client’s own follow-up and sales process, not the ad platform alone.
OpenAI’s privacy guidance for ads states that advertisers do not receive users’ ChatGPT conversations. Advertisers receive aggregated performance information, such as views and clicks. If someone submits details through a business’s own form, the business must still handle that information under the rules that apply to it.
5. Who should consider a test?
Which industries can advertise? OpenAI’s advertising policies currently list categories such as household and consumer goods, local services, travel and entertainment, digital products, and education. This is not blanket approval for every business in those industries. Some categories are restricted or not allowed. Eligibility depends on the specific product or service, market and current ad policies. Our internal test does not mean all B2B businesses are eligible. If you are unsure, contact us to assess your offer before planning a campaign.
Consider a test when you can set a clear learning goal and follow up on enquiries. If you cannot yet meet the five checks above, prepare those basics first or use a channel with a clearer fit.
